As a games magazine publisher, I see a lot of what comes down the pipe. I've looked at new CCGs dealing with death as well as the exploration of space. New products such as "Forge: Out of Chaos" and "Deadlands: Hell on Earth," keep our mind's eyes churning with visuals of Gods, Mortals and Undead. And who could turn a blind gamer's eye to "Vampire 3rd Edition?" This question remains: Are RPGs a benefit or detriment to our collective lives? My answer: How the blazes should I know?! No matter what anyone out there thinks, despite an underlying love for the gaming industry, bordering on an unhealthy obsession--just ask my mother-I really do feel like a normal Joe who happens to publish a gaming periodical. And honesty prevails when I say, "Even my own exposure to 'the game feels limited at times." But I know what I think is fun. And it's not dependent on a specific monochromatic theme. (Those of you who don't know the word "monochromatic" probably aren't familiar with the computer term "8088," either.) If you want to debate Dark versus Light, you might as well throw in the Democrats and Republicans, too, 'cuz I'm just as uninterested in both. The question should better be phrased as, "What do I enjoy?" Is it dressing as an Undead and stalking friends and companions? Great! (As long as it's a structured environment and everyone knows the rules of the game. Otherwise, you may find yourself slapped with a restraining order .. or worse.) White Wolf's got a full ensemble of game products for you. How about strolling through an enchanted forest, embodied as an Elf, Dwarf, or any other of many types of creatures? We can help you there, too. But the list is a lot longer for this one and we'll defer to your judgement to choose the one which suits you best. We can even accommodate those of you who enjoy the spaghetti western, (with a twist.) Pinnacle Entertainment Group foresaw your request and has triumphantly risen to the challenge. Want something on the lighter side of gaming? My wife, Sherrie, and her siblings thoroughly enjoyed Steve Jackson Games' "Toon." As you can see, there's more than a few to choose from. So, those of you out there who think that role playing is merely a bunch of sweaty, smelly guys in Bob's Basement, sitting around drinking soda and losing their dice among the old pizza boxes ... you're right! But if that kind of gaming group doesn't suit your fancy, start one of your own! With the vast selection and types of RPGs available, there's no excuse for not delving into the unreality which suits you best. just remember, at times it's absolutely necessary to shatter the casino spell, put the books, dice or cards down, and come up for a breath of fresh air. As for the Yin and the Yang, leave those for the philosophers. In the meantime, roll the bones...
