Potsdam Flags & Publications

Review

by Steve Turner

I’ve just received the latest offerings from ‘Potsdam Flags & Publications’ and as usual they are quite up to the standard expected. This company never fails to amaze me with the detail they manage to pack into their publications, and in particular their ‘War of the Austrian Succession’ series of booklets. Any wargamer who regularly ‘games the 18th century (like myself) should really not be without them ‘front & centre’ on their bookshelves.

The newest publications come in the form of two booklets (similar to past works) entitled...

    a) Part Vii in the ‘War of the Austrian Succession’ series — “Uniforms of the Russian & Swedish Armies”.
    b) “The Naval Campaign of Lissa 1866”.

The first being another in the excellent series mentioned above, with all the uniform minutiae of both the Russian & Swedish armies of the period, including not only the uniform details, army organisations, regimental names & types of equipment for all arms (incl. Cossacks in the Russian army) but also comprehensive particulars such as officer & NCO identification, neck stock & button colours and even hair & moustache arrangement. As always, there are explanatory sketches included to complement the description of the uniform detail, which is set down, where appropriate, in easily decipherable lists & tables under regimental headings. This booklet includes 27 pages of narrative plus a selected bibliography, and retails at £5.5Op + 75p postage.

The second publication, “The Naval Campaign of Lissa 1866” comes in the form of a detailed narrative which was fought between the Italian & Austrian navies during the mid 19th century. Now, I cannot pretend that I am in any way a naval wargamer, but I have had my moments and can certainly appreciate the amount of research, which must have gone into this publication. Contained within the pages is a comprehensive description of the entire campaign, from its outset, to the naval battle, which ensued. There are a number of black & white sketch maps, as well as the orders of battle for both fleets presenting an exhaustive run down for each individual vessel (a staggering amount of detail in fact — there is even a list of shots fired & casualties received by each ship). The booklet contains 54 pages of exhaustive narrative & explanation and for anyone interested in naval warfare, particularly in the era of the early ironclad, this booklet really shouldn’t be overlooked. This booklet retails at £6.99p + 75p postage.

Both publications above (plus others from the ‘War of the Austrian Succession’ series) can be ordered from: ‘Potsdam Flags & Publications’, 1 Aintree Avenue, Eckington, Derbyshire, S21 4JA. Great Britain.
