Ron Moore : R.I.P.

Obituary

by George Heath

I regret to inform the membership that Ron passed away in April of this year. In naval parlance it would be said that he had "crossed the bar".

Ron served on a destroyer (HMS Eggersford) during WW2 and was extremely proud of the fact. I first met Ron and his wife Jean in Durham Cathedral where I was supposed to "interview" him for the post of Treasurer. This idea was Ron`s and is typical of the man that he should be properly `vetted` for the job.

It is possible that many newer members never encountered Ron but many of the old hands will recall his good natured sniping at attitudes or, as he put it, new ideas. Some will recall his article "How Good A General Am I?" telling of the failure of Lord Ffrench to defeat the enemy in Ron`s campaign. Immediately many members refought the battle and the Court Marshal of Lord Ffrench became the issue of the day. It was the simple things like this that was part of him being controversial.

From that first meeting in the Cathedral evolved a friendship and correspondence that outlived the test of time. His devotion to the hobby, and Solo Wargamers Association in particular, will be greatly missed. He often brought a breath of fresh air to Lone Warrior with his pretend naivety and this will be missed.

An old tradition in the Royal Navy of Ron`s day was, when a good job was completed, the order "Splice the Mainbrace was given". I`m sure that, in memory of a fine old salt, he would have been happy if all the members obeyed the order.

Ron, you will be sadly missed.

R.I.P.
