STEVE HICKS Kenn - apologies, been meaning to drop you a line for about the last 3 issues as I know some clip art sites on the web you may be able to find a use for... Try the following - it's ACW orientated but a lot of the pictures (cannons, muskets etc.) are fairly useful in a number of periods... I use some of these on my web pages... http://civilwarclipart.com/Clipartgallery/clipart.htm ...then I tried a quick search on Copernicus and came up with the following which may be worth checking out. http://sill-www.army.mil/Graphics/clipart_library.htm ..which seems to be mostly modern. http://www.military-net.com/html/sgp58.html ...which is a portal to loads of sites.... ...hope that keeps you going, and keep up the excellent work! [Wow & Thanks for this, Kenn] DAVID ELRICK A good site for solo games - http://www.geocities.com/alsandor/jeux/sololistrev1.html GEORGE HEATH Congratulations on the excellent turn out. There was a time when many of the articles [in Lone Warrior] had only a passing interest for me but, lately, the whole thing is too much to take in. Having said that, there have been many times when I have gone to back issues (some years back) and found just the chestnut I wanted in an article that I had passed over as not being interesting at the time. I have just treated myself to a new computer so, with a little luck, I may be on the Internet and being a general nuisance. In the meantime keep up the good work. Shocking that the subs have had to be kept low for a further year when everyone seems to be putting their’s up. Only joking. Honest!! [George, great to hear from you and thanks for the article. Once on the Net, you will be able to email me articles – hint!] [Just part of the Samurai Sub Culture correspondence that goes on behind the hidden pages of Lone Warrior. If interested please contact me direct. Kenn] IAN DUNCAN Due to other commitments, my Samurai rules have been on the back burner for about six months. I've only managed about six or seven solo games and made loads of tweaks and changes so now most of the basic mechanics are in place - i.e. movement, combat, morale. I'm now working on command & control. I have a card driven system for solo play and am in the process of developing a more, er, sophisticated method for two players (and for those who don't like the card system). I've just started expanding the rules for clan commanders and generals (at the moment they only really give a plus for morale/combat etc.) Eventually I would like to integrate the command system with a deployment method to allow for formations such as "cranes wing", "birds in flight", "arrowhead" and so on. Have some vague ideas how to implement this but it will take a lot of work so I don't expect that to happen for a while yet. One area which caused me some concern was how missile armed ashigaru would react when charged. Initially I allowed them a sort of evade move but on reading Turnbull's "Samurai Source Book" and "Ashigaru", it would appear that they were expected to fight hand to hand, so the evade move has been removed! I allow them to fall back through supporting troops but I'm not really happy with this. Maybe I should make them stand and fight – morale permitting. Any thoughts on the subject? [Stand and slug it out! Troops moving to the rear might just keep going – see Rich’s Bull Run article]. Once I iron out a few niggles and tidy up my command rules, I'll send them to you for LW if you want. At the moment they run to 12 pages - but the mechanisms are all fairly streamlined, honest!! Finally bought "Warhammer Ancient Battles" out of curiosity last week (inspired as usual by your enthusiasm!). I had always been put off by the fact that they seem to be intended for 25mm figures and most of my ancients are 6mm and my samurai are 15mm. Not sure if I can use them easily but I'll sure give it a try asap. I see from the Warhammer Historical web site that a supplement for the Far East and Asia is in the works entitled "Divine Wind". Maybe I'll be able to nick some ideas for my own rules when it comes out. [I use 15mm figures with WHAB, Fall of the West and more recently Warhammer ECW and do not change ranges, movement distances etc and it works for me – perks of solo wargaming]. Also, Chipco Games will be releasing a set of Samurai rules for large battles of the Sengoku-Jidai next month entitled "Chrysanthemum Throne" - there's a mouthful! Feudal Japan seems to be getting popular as a period these days. See what you've started! ANTONY SPENCER Thanks, spoke to Irregular last week and ordered some more figures along with a 6mm Chinese village, which they said would fit the bill. Have organised the figures into 4 clans. Borrowed your idea in LW124 about allocating a set number of mounted and foot Samurai units to each clan. The Ashigaru were then allocated on a random basis. Have ended up with two large clans and two small clans. Funny you mentioned Shogun Total War, brilliant game which kept me up to all hours last Christmas. I was going to use the clans represented in that game as you suggest. Have you played Medieval Total War? Immense game, which will keep you busy for a very long time. [Have, and thoroughly enjoyed it, although not really my period. The wide variety of troops available is staggering and I think the best tip with this game is “Trust No One “!] Will send the maps soon, anyway off to paint some more Men of Gondor. [If you have any topic you wish to discuss, solo tips to pass on or just want a general natter with the rest of the membership please feel free to drop me a line.
