The diagram shows a watchtower model made for use with North-West Frontier colonial games. How it was made: 1. Cut out four walls with slightly tapering edges so that it is larger at the base than the top. Foam board (available in art shops), which is easy to cut and gives a good impression of the wall thickness at the top of the tower and for cut out windows, was used. 2. Cut out the base shapes from a block of expanded polystyrene and glue them to the walls. The expanded polystyrene has a bubbly texture which looks like a boulder built wall. Be careful with the glue you use, some will melt the polystyrene. PVA glue works quite well. 3. When you have glued all the walls and bases together cut out the watchtower lookout platform and wedge it in the tower from underneath. Add glue to fill in any cracks and to make sure the platform stays in place when you put the figure on it. 4. Cut tiny lengths from a matchstick and glue them on two opposite walls to represent the wooden beams of the platform showing through the wall. Paint the base of the tower with a grey/brown acrylic wash to bring out the stone texture of the polystyrene. The top part of the tower can be dabbed with thick terracotta coloured acrylic paint. A thick coat of paint will dry with cracks and the dabbing gives a rough texture so producing the mud brick effect.
