Italeri Gaul Warriors

Review

by Jonathan Aird

A 40-figure set of Celtic warriors from Italeri, in the usual silver plastic (I wish they'd go for a more neutral colour). The figures are supplied with separate shields - two designs, either oval or hexagonal. This allows for two variants of each figure to be produced, which is fortunate because - leaving aside the 4 figure "command group" - there are just 4 variants of figure in the box.

There is a pair of bare chested warriors with spears - one running, the other throwing; a very nearly naked swordsman; and a higher status swordsman with a helmet and chain armour. The command group consists of a running standard bearer, a carnyx player with a sling, and a pair of "chiefs". Each of the 8 different figures in the set is beautifully sculpted and posed, the command group in particular are amongst the best plastic figures available, with lots of detail. Little details such as a spike for the standard to be stuck into the ground with have not been overlooked.

This set will mix in well with the Esci Barbarians (who will provide a greater variety of shields), and would be useful for anyone building up a Celtic army in plastic (using a combination of HaT, Airfix, Esci and Revell figures). However, the only reservation is that there is too little variety in the box to really suit an irregular army. At £2.99 a box, however, they are still worth picking up.
