Solitaire King Maker

Amendments

by Paul Grace

I play the game as if it were a two-player game, with the following amendments:

Neville and Percy: Take Warwick (Neville) and Percy out of the pack and activate them - as if drawn from pack, with one on each side. These are the leaders of the two rival factions. If either Warwick or Percy is killed, return to the bottom of the pack - if later drawn by the other faction return to pack and reshuffle: Neville and Percy will not fight on the same side.

Stanley: Must always play the Stanley card if drawn - cannot keep in hand. Must give him first available title and office cards.

Stanley's Treachery: If a 'storms at sea' card is drawn as an event - roll D6 - a 1 or 2 results in an act of treachery being made: If Stanley is in play, he defects (with his entire office and title cards etc.) to the opposing faction. He may either attack any other nobles in the same square or move to join the nearest friendly noble (receiving one free move). In battles involving Stanley (except battles resulting from treachery) roll a D6 - a score of 1 results in Stanley holding back - his troops not being included in the battle for that turn.

Use of Writ cards? I was planning on using the writ cards to trigger off some random event - but I never got around to it.

DBA To fight out Kingmaker clashes on the wargames table using the DBA set of rules, I use the following conversion rates:

10 strength points gives one DBA element. Here are some examples:

Nobles strength 100 (i.e. Percy) 5 blade, 5 bow
Nobles strength 50 (e.g. Neville) 3 blade 2 bow
Nobles strength 30 (e.g. Beaufort) 2 blade 1 bow
Nobles strength 20 (e.g. Holland) 1 blade 1 bow
Nobles strength 10 (e.g. Scrope) 1 blade
Bishops / Arch Bishops strength 30 - 3 auxiliary
Titles strength 40 (e.g. Earl of Richmond) 2 blade 2 bow
Offices strength 50 (e.g. Warden of Cinque Ports) 4 auxiliary 1 bow
Burgundian mercenaries (30) 1 arty 2 bow (handgunners)
Flemmish Mercenaries (20) 2 Pk
Scots (20) 2 bd or warband
Knights can replace blades.

Before the battle (and setting up) draw an event card, ignoring all except 'bad weather delays attack'. Following the battle, draw an event card to see if any victorious nobles died in the attack. Small clashes (i.e. with less than 12 elements) or those with overwhelming odds on one side are best resolved using the Kingmaker system. I do not employ any solo system for moving the two factions - I just decide the best action for each (tossing a coin if there are two close options).
