The Battlefield Walker's Handbook

Book Review

Ready for the intellectual in depth analytical review? It's a cracker! Now my periods of interest are basically Samurai, Ancients and a passing dabble in the Normandy WWII campaign so you will see from the following that there was something in this book for me (!).

Hundred Years War (1337-1453). Battle of Crecy 26 August 1346.

Waterloo 1815. [Walked this one myself and could have done with Don's book at the time]

Peninsular War 1808-14. [Have read all the Sharpe books and seen the films]

The Zulu War 1879. Battle of Rorke's Drift 22/23 January 1879. [As a boy soldier was marched ,along with the rest of my regiment, to watch the film when it first came out because Lieutenant Chard was a Sapper officer. Best duty I ever had.]

The First Boer War 1881. Fight on Majuba Hill 27 February 1881. [My birthday, but not year!]

The South African War 1899-1902. Battle of Spion Kop 23/24 January 1900.

AWI - Battles at Saratoga 19 September and 7 October 1777. [Right up Rich Barbuto's street]

The War of 1812. Battle of Queenston Heights 13 October 1812. [Rich scores again!]

ACW. Battle of Gettysburg 1-3 July 1863. [One for Graham, and I have a couple of CSA 15mm divisions for Fire and Fury]

Well I've tried my best to fix a link with all the above battles but they are really not my periods. That said, once I picked it up I had to restrict myself to reading about one battle a week, because Don's enthusiasm for the topic is in every line. From an historical perspective this is a very handy book to have on ones bookshelf but from a gamers point of view, especially those who like to flitter between various periods then this book is a must!

There are gamers, and I include myself in this, who just to have to see that the author is 'DF' and the book is essential purchase, irrespective of the period involved. Having admitted my long term bias in favour of Don's work, please accept this as an honest review. Quite a few of my books have been signed by Don and one day I'll jump in the car travel the length of England and ask him to sign the rest for me.

There is sufficient detail to fight the battles either strategically or from a tactical point of view, including maps and modern photographs of the battlefields. Each chapter is broken into:

The course of the war.

Details of the battle.

The battlefield or area today.

Don's memories of walking the battlefields.

The new addition to the ever growing Don Featherstone 'home grown' library is:

THE BATTLEFIELD WALKER'S HANDBOOK - ISBN 1 85310 811 2. Published by Airlife Publishing Ltd, 101 Longden Rd, Shrewsbury, SY3 9 EB. RRP - £ 19.95.

Miss out on this book, irrespective of your particular interests, at your peril. Kenn Hart
