Like many wargamers of my generation, I started off with Airfix figures for the American Civil War and World War Two. By the time I reached my twenties, the troops, tanks and artillery had been boxed and consigned to the loft, in favour of metal figures of ancients and renaissance. My interest in the Second World War was reawakened when I read a really enthusiastic review by Wally Simon in the Wargames Illustrated (December 1997) of 'Crossfire', a rule set by Arty Conliffe for WW2 in 20mm. I had been looking for an excuse to dust off my figures, but the main thing that caught my attention was the fact that the rules did not require a ruler or measuring equipment and did not use a rigid turn sequence. I'm a sucker for rule systems, so I dashed out and acquired a set. Crossfire - A Flawed Masterpiece
