Livonia

New Play by Mail Game!

by Stuart Schoenberger

Livonia is a subchapter of the Great Northern War. Russia's Tsar Peter, not yet the Great, was deeply humiliated by Sweden's King Charles XII at the battle of Narva. Unfortunately for Sweden, King Charles had fatally redirected his energies against the Kingdom of Poland, the presumed linchpin for the alliance of Poland, Denmark, and Russia. In the interim, Tsar Peter scrambled to rebuild his defeated army along western lines.

Now Livonia. Outnumbered and outgunned, the Swedish commanders, with second-line garrison forces, are assigned the responsibility of staving off the encroaching Russians from Sweden's granary. Their counterpart in the Russian army, admittedly controlling the larger sized army, have an equally difficult task. While the Swedish forces have a well-deserved reputation for triumphing against staggering odds, the Russian army, as presently constituted, is poorly trained and does not outnumber the Swedes more than 2 to 1 (3 to 1 odds are necessary for the successful conduct of any siege).

An excellent opportunity exists for both sides. Three Swedish and four Russian, (including one cossack) commanders are needed to partake in recreating what was an interesting subchapter of decisive military history. The gamemaster will forward all mail to all participants. With monthly moves, this game should not take longer than 2 years of real time. The gamemaster asks for a one-time fee to cover the cost of all materials and mailings. This fee should be regarded more as a commitment fee than anything else. Write to Stuart Schoenberger, P.O.
