Letters to the Editor

Chris Grice: You might like to know you have been partly responsible for the conversion of Chris (I'll never buy a computer game) Grice. The other weekend, having been relaxed by a liquid lunch and then dragged screaming round Meadowhall Shopping Centre for a couple of hours, I was sufficiently weakened to spend some money of "Age of Sail". It's good, isn't it? Mind you I'm completely hopeless. My campaign character has so far cost the Royal Navy no less than 13 warships, without a single prize in compensation. Is this a record? (I think they shot Admiral Byng for less). Obviously I'm not going to give up now.

[Chris perhaps you should get in touch with Craig Ambler who seems to have the golden touch with Age of Sail. Main thing is you are enjoying it and so is Davey Jones by the sound of it. Like your Celtic article and will be using a few of the ideas with my ever increasing Samurai clans. Kenn]

Paul Spedding: Ref comments in Lone Warrior 120. I enjoy both head-to-head wargames and playing solo, which means I have the best of both worlds. Prior to me stumbling on a club l was a 'pure' soloist and thoroughly enjoyed my games, that said on joining the club I found out about painting and basing techniques, new rules, new figures and was able to meet with fellows of the same mind. Most of this I still get from the club but I also find that the pages of Lone Warrior give me impetus with my soloing when I read of a new (well to me anyway) system for using the automatic (!) opponent. I made the mistake of years ago when I first joined of just reading articles that were of particular interest to me. One day when thumbing through some Back Copies I had just bought I came across an article which was outside my sphere of interest, but the system was easily adapted to my games. This began a re-read of my copies of Lone Warrior, over a long period of time, and I certainly found some gems hidden in the pages. Finally, I like articles with rules attached but also enjoy reading those articles that just tell one what happened and would like to take this opportunity of thanking all those concerned. I enjoy borrowing your ideas!

[That's what they are printed for. Kenn]

Kevin White: I think it's a very good idea to publish the beginners pack outside of the SWA. By doing this I think that we will encourage more people to become wargamers in the first place, and maybe encourage those who have been gaming for some time to join up when they see the quality of what is on offer. For me the most important ingredient were the rule mechanisms contained in the pack. They helped me to see how I could play a solo wargame against an unpredictable foe.

On a related theme, I wonder if it might be possible to publish an extract or two from Don Featherstone's book "Solo Wargaming". I know that the book has been out of print for some time and that we have a copy in the SWA library. The beginners pack may just spark enough interest for some enterprising publisher to consider another print run (or perhaps we could do that from within the SWA)

[Kevin, thanks for the serial article. We hope the "Introduction to Solo Wargaming" will work but we need input from ALL members and Michael will gladly accept it. Don, how about it? Kenn]
