by David Barnes
The Age of Napoleon. No 20, £2.50 UK, Partizan Press, 816-818 London Road, Leigh on Sea, Essex, SS9 3NH. Another excellent issue - the maps by Derek Stone will be of great assistance to wargamers. They are clear, the contours simplified into hatching and the troop placements clearly shown Of the articles, one titled "How Was It For You ? The Great and Glorious Peace Celebrations of 1814" is an intriguing sidelight on the social life and consequences of the Napoleonic period. The "Terribly Obscure Battle" this time is "Würzburg 3 Sept 1796" by Dave Hollins. A good scenario for cavalry generals, an excellent map and extensive ORBATS. Even a paragraph on wargaming the battle. There's a good article by John Greham, "The French Invasion of Portugal", with another good map by Derek Stone. An excellent article for "Gunners" by Chas. Reavley, "A Burst of Shell", of rule influencing proportions for those wargamers who love to use Grand Batteries. The book reviews are very interesting - 'tis said all the books can be obtained thro' "Partizan". A book feature on "For King + Country", the Letters + Diaries of John Mills, Coldstream Guards, 1811 - 14, peninsular letters with sidelights on the army's view of the Duke; "Hunting in the peninsular" by Lionel Dawson with superb drawings by Lionel Edwards (i.e. hunting with hounds); "Sharpe in England" by Richard Rutherford-Moore with an unfortunate photo of Sean Bean with his hand over the barrel of his Baker rifle, resting. No sensible rifleman would do that, as it would make the barrel sweat and cause rusting. "Partisan Press" now have listings for "Prince August" 25 & 45mm moulds. They can also supply a basic moulding (gravity) kit. Both you and your partner can slave over a hot stove, if you've a mind to, now. Send an SAE for details. Battlefields No 6, £3 UK. Another Partizan magazine. In this issue there are the following articles: Dabulamanzi's Kraal, 1879. Quatre Bras, 1815. Sanderhausen, 1758. Cacabellos, 1809. Heiligerlee, 1568. The Battle of Madrid,Part 2. Plus various letters and wargaming columns. There are very few adverts taking up space. Took a while to arrive but an excellent read. Kenn.
