SOLO BOARDGAMES

by Graham Empson

Got my copy of the boardgame Mosby's Raiders out just to have something to keep me ticking over while I build my baseboards to try out Kenn's 'Stand To' article in Battlefields when I had another of my 'thoughts'. I wonder how many Solo orientated Boardgames there are in the marketplace?

Well I got out the catalogues I picked up at RECON 96, had a good look through and found fifteen. It occurred to me that they would be an ideal introduction to solo wargaming, giving an insight into the various mechanics which compose the automated opponent. They would also demonstrate to the newcomer that the creation of mechanisms is neither difficult nor daunting just a matter really, of adaptation.

Anyway, the following list is what I have found, but our members being knowledgeable people will probably know a number of others that I have missed.

Solo Advanced Squad Leader - Avalon Hill
B17 Queen of the Skies - Avalon Hill
    Phase Line Smash - GDW
    Hornet Leader - GMT Games
Thunderbolt / Apache Leader - GMT Games
    Danger Zone - GMT Games
    Ranger - Omega Games
    Ambush - Victory Games
    Battle Hymn - Victory Games
    Carrier - Victory Games
    Mosby's Raiders - Victory Games
    Open Fire - Victory Games
    Pelopennisian War - Victory Games
    Tokyo Express - Victory Games
    Tarawa - 3W

They seem to cover a fairly good spread of periods, there is even another ACW game, all I have to do now is find it. Not all the games listed are currently in print but most are available in the second hand market. I haven't included the magazine games "General" or S&T in the list above but I know that on occasion they also include Solo scenarios. [Wolf Pack was an excellent solo boardgame. Kenn]
