A Fresh Start

by Martin Hogg

Having finally got around to joining the SWA, after years of prevarication, I recently received 'Lone Warrior' issues 115 to 117. The desired effect was achieved, in that my enthusiasm was entirely rekindled. Over the last year or so, games, solo or otherwise, have been increasingly less frequent, and the letters and articles I read made me dust off a few things that have been unused for a long time.

I had a bit of a think as to why I never seem to finish any solo projects these days and came to the conclusion that I was not happy with a lot of the rules and systems I was using, and really worrying too much about it being 'proper', sticking to compromises made to appease fellow gamers, and decided to completely rethink some of the things I was doing, so that I would enjoy the 'solo' bit of solo wargaming a bit more.

One result was to rebase my Napoleonic French and Russian armies and devise a rules set with buckets of dice and a table divided into a 1 inch grid, no more tape measures! Such a move would strike horror into many a wargaming heart, I know, but I've even tried it out on a real live sceptical human opponent, and it seems to work ! Editor permitting, I might send in the details once I've ironed out the edges. [Permission granted]

This weekend I dug, out my collection of 25mm Indian Mutiny figures and bits of scenery. These were originally mustered in an earlier period of devotion to the hobby, inspired by a stunning Derby club participation game at a Partizan show in Newark many years ago. They once enjoyed many a happy Sunday afternoon's gaming with a few friends, but have been confined to the 'other stuff' shelf for a while now. I decided to set up a fairly compact game on a 3' x 4' table, so that I could leave it set up, and after placing the buildings and wall sections, sat down to come up with a plan to solo the game. The result was nothing startlingly new, no doubt, to you veteran soloers, but made for an enjoyable game.
