Chaos at
Knifesman Cove

Fantasy Scenario

By Billy Brand

SORD THE PROUD of Asmire gazed out of his tent to where the waves broke gently upon the shore 500 paces away. Further than that he could not see as the fog, common along these coasts at this time of year, hid the sea from his view. Somewhere out there was the fleet of GORFANG DWARF-THROTTLER Orc leader of the Broken Thumb Orc Clan. His warriors had been raiding the coast for many weeks destroying crops and villages.

King Sord had assembled his army and marched to the coast. The Orc fleet had been spotted two days ago and Sord had marched to the only beaching point where the Orcs could land. With his army spread out along the beach they had made camp last night.

Sord's army consisted of:

20 x Foot knights (2 x 10 figs): Full armour, sword and shield.
5 Light Cavalry: No armour, Light spear.
50 Human Infantry (5 x 10 figs): Leather armour, spear, sword.
20 Human Infantry (2 x 10 figs): Bow, sword and shield.
5 x Dwarf crossbowmen: Leather armour, x-bow and sword
10 x Dwarf Infantry: Leather armour, shield and axe

Far on the other side of the fog bank, the red eyes of Gorfang looked towards the coast. His lookouts had spotted the campfires of the encamped enemy last night and he made sure they had kept a respectful distance between the coast and his ships. With the arrival of daylight Gorfang had seen the fog roll in. Quickly he ordered signals to be made. The fleet would run for shore under cover of the mist and catch the humans by surprise.

Preparation for Battle.

1.Divide your games table into six (6) areas. (se Fig 1).
2.Now dice (D6) for each Allied unit and place them at the table edge in the corresponding section, e.g. Unit 1: 10 x Human Foot Knights, Die score 5. Unit goes in Area 5 etc.
3.Place King Sord with the Light Cavalry.
4.As soon as the first Orc ship beaches, a light cavalry figure must be sent to each Allied unit and spend half a move there. The unit can then move under your command.
5.Any unit attacked before being visited by the Light Cavalry count as Disordered.

The Orcs.

The Orc Fleet consists of:

    1 x Flagship carrying Gorfang Dwarf-Throttler. 5 x Dark Elf's & 3 x Trolls.
1 x Very Large Ship carrying 10 x Orc Infantry: Chainmail, sword and shield.
4 x Large Ships each with 3 Orc Infantry: Leather Armour, spear and shield.
5 x Medium Ships each with 2 Orc Infantry & 2 Goblin Bows: Leather Armour, sword and shield.
8 x Small Ships each with 3 x Goblin Infantry (1 with bow): Leather Armour, sword and shield.

The Game Mechanics.

  1. The fog bank is thicker than Gorfang realises and the fleet becomes disorganised.
  2. To represent this use plain card for each ship and mark down what each carries.
  3. Then throw 1D4 to decide which turn they arrive and 1D6 for which area the beach at.
  4. Alternatively you could use the chart below:

    TurnShipsArea

    Small Ship

    Objectives.

The aim of the Orcs is to defeat the Allied Force which would mean they could raid the coast with impunity.

The Allies must force the Orcs back into the sea!

Finally my thanks to Mr Guy Halsall for the original idea.
