War College, and
Rise and Rule of Ancient Empires

by Graham Empson

By way of a change I have written a short editorial and supplied a few notes on games I think are worthy of a closer look. You will note that there is no review from me in sight. This is due solely to you, the members!

You have supplied the reviews of the games you have been playing, providing your views on whats in the market place. This is what games corner is all about so keep the news, views, and reviews rolling in. I am happy to receive them hand-written, typed, or even on diskette. The most important thing is they are being written by members for members! I shall now place the lecturn back in the garage.

WAR COLLEGE by Gametek

Do you remember Universal Military Simulator I (UMS I)? I had a version on my old Atari which I thoroughly enjoyed playing. Then came UMS II which left me cold; it was just too strategic. Well now the authors have come out with what is effectively UMS III. It uses geographical survey data to construct battlefields, represents units with actual brigade frontages, calculates combats using both facing and flanking fire. Add to this historical data on commanders, orders of battle, historical tactics and a scenario editor and I think you will agree it has to be worth a look. It is released on CD-ROM. So if you spot a demo, or even better, you have a copy, then tell the rest of us about it.

RISE AND RULE OF ANCIENT EMPIRES by Impressions (Sierra)

This is for all the ancient gamers out there to prove you are not forgotten. I thought this might be worth a closer look since it is by Impressions who brought out the likes of D-Day: Beginning of the End; Blue and Gray etc. They have now become part of the Sierra group of companies, who themselves have a reputation for supplying good multimedia software. This offering allows you to choose from Visigoths (barbarians I think), Egypt, Mesopotamia-Persia, Greece, India or China as your start point to building an empire. You have to govern, build cities, explore, build armies, trade, instigate research, conquer and engage in diplomacy. The objective is simple, world domination! The games has 3D graphics, modem option, an on-line tutorial and comes on CD-ROM.
