John Curry - I was impressed by "How it Works" in Lone Warrior 114 and it was one of the best yet. I hope you still find time to play some games. It really puts the "Glossies" in perspective. They seem so limited compared to the array of ideas in the average Lone Warrior. [Thanks John. Yes I do manage to get the odd game in but having just completed an intensive Swimming Teachers course last week I aim to do a lot more, in order to escape from forms, pools and exams! Hope you enjoy the boardgames you bought. Also thanks for your kind words to Steve Moore, I know he appreciates them. Kenn] Read How It Works David Cooke - I would like to say having only joined the Solo Wargamers Association in the last year the Lone Warrior is both interesting and well produced and just the thing that restarts my wargaming in a serious way. There are plenty of useful ideas contained within each magazine and most are of a generic nature so appeal across the differing periods I am interested in. Keep up the good work and hopefully I will get around to writing something for you in the none too distant future. [Thanks for that David and it is good to hear that we are adding to your wargaming enjoyment. Without feedback myself and the rest of the Background Boys are working in the dark. I suppose the most positive type of feedback is when a member re-subscribes but it is also good to just hear from members on a casual basis. Kenn] Sean Clark- His comments on Lone Warrior 114 were "Jolly good it is too!" [Sean, short but heart-warming! Hope the Beginners Pack gave you some ideas and helps improve your games. Kenn] Nic Tall - I enjoy reading the magazine and keeping up with the broad discussion within the hobby. Keep up the good work for all us solo-wargamers.[Hope the move went smoothly and that you and your figures are now settled in your new abode. Kenn] Mark Mahoney - I have just received Lone Warrior 114; another excellent edition, and congratulations on the Association's 20th Birthday. I will have to get to work and actually contribute and uticle to Lone Warrior, now that I have been with the Solo Wargamers Association for 10 years! The only thing I can think of is suggestions for setting up wargames campaigns - I've had plenty of practice at that, even if I haven't had the time to actually run them! All the best for the next 20 years. [Good to hear from you again Mark and I hope you enjoy the boardgame. Only 10 years without an article, I believe the current record stands at 13 years but please don't wait that long. Look forward to receiving your ideas. Kenn] John Holt (Warrior Miniatures) - Reason for joining the Solo Wargamers Association "Understanding wargame rules (Ha! Ha!)" [Great. Cheered up a dull Yorkshire morning!] John Gardiner -Following Bob Walkers review of Civilwar Battleset [in Lone Warrior 114] I got a copy from him as he offered. I was impressed und then found a later version on shareware plus Civil War Strategy Games which is also a good fun game. A disk copy is attached for you to try out - I have sent off to register both games. [John sent this to Graham. Really good to see that members are helping each other with their hobby through the pages of Lone Warrior. Kenn] Steve Shaw (Feudal Castings) -What are you looking for from the Solo Wargamers Association? The six winning numbers for the National Lottery! (Preferably before the draw). As well as articles on how to do it. (Wargaming that is). I am beginning to think that the fumes from the castings are getting to Steve & John! P. Mannering - Thanks for welcoming me to the Solo Wargamers Association and sending me copies of Lone Warrior. So far I have received 111-113 all of which are "Brilliant" and "addictive". [Glad you are enjoying your membership and that the back copies you ordered contain the details you were after. Kenn] Ian Duncan - [Comments enclosed with some Op Archive work he did]. Ref Reviews: The Wild West seems to be the in thing at the moment. I'll be sticking to the Wild East though. [Another Samurai fan]. I got a "10 pound off" voucher for Warhammer Fantasy Battle with the computer version and wondered if you knew anyone who was thinking of getting it. If so they are welcome to have the voucher which is valid until September 1996. [Well, Turbo, danke for the work and the generous offer of the voucher. If any member, apart from Jervis, would like it the first SAE to me gets it. Kenn] Paul Grace- Vexed bv Hexes. Michael Gray's letter in LW 113, regarding hex sheets touched a raw nerve. I can offer two solutions : Virgin Games sell pads of hex sheets in at least two sizes. Many naval and aerial boardgames use blank hexes to play on (usually in various shades of blue). It might be an idea to try photocopying one of these (but check the copyright first). My problem with hexes is: How do you produce them on a computer? I've tried various graphic packages and looked through loads of clipart files, but I just cannot produce a decent diagram or map with a hexagon background. If I had a scanner, preswnably it would be easy to copy one onto a file - but I don't. I have a convoluted theory that by faxing a blank hex sheet to a computer with a fax modem then perhaps the fax file could be converted to a .BMP, .PCX or .TIF graphic file. I suspect that our editor might also be having problems in printing hexes in LW - can anyone help? Jonathan Aird -Thanks for Lone Warrior 114, an excellent issue to celebrate 20 years with; a good balance of news, reviews, back to basics (I'm thinking of Dull Solo Wargaming especially) and rules mechanisms. Once I'd figured it out I was very taken with your orders for Samurai games article, something along these lines may well be what I need for a 2mm game that I'm working on at present. Although at 2mm even pebbles become mighty mountains for figures to drag around behind them! For such small scale figures a clutter free table is essential to preserve any visual effect. The list of manufacturers offering SWA members a discount seems to be growing - I've had occasion to exercise this benefit once so far, at SALUTE, or, more accurately, in the "Rogues Gallery" of "excluded" traders, one of which was Village Green. A very fine Samurai residence is now awaiting attention on the painting table. I hadn't realised that Freikorps and Peter Pig also offered discounts, or I'd have made more of an effort to push to the front of the crush around their stalls. I think SALUTE has really outgrown its venue, and needs to either move or cut the number of traders by about 20 to make for a more pleasant environment! Looking forward to the next 20 years. [Thanks for the comments and the articles. Glad you had the opportunity to get a discount from Steve at Village Green, a minor miracle! Perhaps there is a member who uses 2mm and can pass on, via Lone Warrior, some tips to you to help keep the visual aspect while at the same time having a system of visual orders.
