How it works in 1995/1996

by Your Editor, Kenn Hart
(on a Soapbox)

1. Member receives Lone Warrior and is instantly inspired to write a letter/article based on what has just been read. [This part is pure fiction.]

2. Article sent to Editor. [Note: No time scale involved in this! 13 years is current record]

3. Article checked by Editor for various things but mainly to ensure it deals with solo aspects of wargaming.

4. Sent out for typing or done himself, depending on timeframe and complexity. If received near the deadline for publication then done by the Editor but if there is plenty of time and/or it is complex then off to the Op Archives, from now on to be known as The Team! A great bunch of lads.

5. The Team burns the midnight oil and inputs the articles onto disk. [This is true because it is possible to see what time work was actually done on files when I receive them]

6. Items received back by Editor who can now finally start to think of actually editing the item ! This process is covered in mystery and usually done under the influence of many cups of caffeine!

7. Draft Lone Warrior worked out. But something always crops up and it can take 2 or more attempts before satisfaction is achieved. Late submissions of articles springs to mind!

8. Master Copy is done. Editor keeps a copy both on floppy disk and a hard copy. The Master hard copy is then sent to the Production Manger, who is also at present the Membership Secretary, who takes it down to the printer and gets sufficient copies run off. While this is going on, he produces labels for the envelopes and sticks them on. Collects completed Lone Warriors from the printers and gets a sample weighted at the Post Office in order to calculate how many and what type of stamps he needs. Buys the stamps and sticks them on the envelopes, at the same time putting in the copy of Lone Warrior plus any inserts i.e. flyers. He then staggers to Post Office and posts that edition. [Sits down and enjoys a well earned pint of foaming stuff]

9. A copy of the edition on disk and the graphics in hard copy are sent to the NA Editor, who with another mystery shrouded process produces our NA Edition. Unsure if caffeine is used to the same extent! [absolutely- Rich].

10. Members receive their copy of Lone Warrior and the process starts all over again! [Back to Fantasy]

This is just a quick skim over what goes on in the background and shows that there are quite a few members involved in producing the finished magazine. How the Editors of the past, John Bennett, Bill Farley and Chris Constable, managed in what I gather was basically a One-Man Show is amazing and I take my editorial hat off to them. We can and do accept articles and letters in any form from handwritten to those sent on disk or E-Mail and are delighted to do so. Our present organisation is such that we can handle anything; no boast, it is a fact. There is considerable expertise within the Committee and The Team. The two main problem areas which are out of our control is the production of articles and letters by members, without which Lone Warrior and subsequently the Solo Wargamers Association will cease to exist. Rich's note: North American members are increasingly writing articles and letters for publication. Keep up the good work!
