Ukrainian Para Drops - Sosnovka, June 1942

(Part II)

By Mark Bevis

Soviet Forces: The partisans are in fact awaiting a Soviet army para drop of specialists and supplies. These are due to land in B5/6 at dawn, and consist of:

2 Paratroop Companies @

Company HQ: 1 rifle squad, radio set
    4 platoons @ 3 rifle squads, 3 x LMG, 1 PTRD41 1 Battery: 6 x 107mm M38 mortars, radio set 1 Platoon: 4 x MMG, 1 x PTRD41
Roll 1D6 for when they arrive:
1,2: Soviets drop 2 moves before the Hungarians
3: Soviets drop 1 move before the Hungarians
4: Soviets drop on the same move as Hungarians
5: Soviets drop 1 move after the Hungarians
6: Soviets drop 3 moves after the Hungarians

The heavy weapons and radios are well wrapped in waterproof skins, and would take 2D average moves to prepare for use, but are not destroyed if falling in trees, swamp or the river. Already on the ground are several partisan groups:

    In B3 woods: 3 rifle squads, 3 x LMG
    In F5 treeline: 3 rifle squads, 1 x LMG
In A3 village: 3 rifle squads
    In A5 wood: 2 SMG squads, 1 x LMG
In H3 forest: partisan camp, radio, 2 SMG squads, 2 x 50mm mortars (3 salvos HE)

When the first paras land (either Hungarian or Soviet), the nearest 3 partisan groups move to meet them. Their only objective is to move the paras and their heavy weapons to the forest camp in H3. Note that the areas marked with conifers are in fact passable to partisans along tiny tracks - Hungarians will only find these if they have been recently used. On realising that the paras are Hungarians (either by coming within 25m or by coming under fire), the partisans will try to move to the camp at H3 unseen, even if this means leaving the Soviet paras in the lurch. Soviet paratroops are BT2 (well trained, good morale), partisans are DT4 (poor morale and training).

Axis Reinforcements: 4D average moves after the Hungarian paras have landed; the sweeping force enters on A2/3/4: Elements of a German Security Division:

    Battalion HQ: 2 rifle squads, 1 x LMG, 2 x trucks, 1 x staff car, radio
    1 Company:
Company HQ: 1 rifle squad, 1 LMG, horses, radio
      3 platoons @ 4 rifle squads, 4 LMG, horses
    1 Platoon: 2 x Ba-32 armoured cars (no radios)
    1 Gun Platoon: 2 x 7.5cm IG18, Horses, Radio

The Ba-32s enter on road A3, followed by the BHQ, the IG18 platoon, an infantry platoon, and the CHQ. The other infantry platoons are in line either side of the Ba-32s. Orders are to advance thus to the ford D3 and there meet up with some Hungarian Paras and join them in any anti-partisan ops. If no enemy around, march north leaving the table at H4. Germans are CT4 (average morale, poor training).
