Ukrainian Para Drops - Sosnovka, June 1942

Part I

By Mark Bevis

Axis anti-partisan operations on the edges of the Pripet Marshes near Kiev included the use of Hungarian forces. After the loss of several convoys near Sosnovka, the Germans ordered the sole Hungarian Para Battalion to land north of a river near the marshes, whilst a ground sweep moved north to meet them. In theory, any fleeing partisans would then bump into either force and be destroyed.

You command the Axis forces: Hungarian Szent Laszlo Paratroop Battalion:

All carried in 30 x Ju-52

3 companies @

    CHQ: 2 rifle squads, 2 x 5cm mortars
    3 platoons @ 4 rifle squads, 3 x LMG, 2 x GPMG

Orders are to drop at dawn in the Fl/2 area, hold and secure the wood edge F3/4 and search then hold the northern river bank. Follow up other leads as appropriate. Expect partisans moving up from the South, and also watch for activity to the North. You will await friendly forces moving up from the South. Take no prisoners.

Known terrain details: The river is waist deep, slow flowing, & takes a full move to cross. The road is a dirt track. Streams are easily crossable. Conifers represent dense tangled woodland, impassable to regular infantry. Other woodland is dense heavy cover. Scrub provides heavy cover. All going is soft, but areas marked as swamp are waterlogged grassland, movement at half speed. Hungarian paras are BT3 (good morale, average training).
