Murphy's Laws

David Walker and Graham Empson

  • The enemy is not second guessing your plan, he is merely viewing the problem from another direction.
  • Bullets are irresponsible, they don't care who they hit.
  • If the response to 'who goes there' is a hail of bullets, assume they are not going to be your friends.
  • The battle may not go to the strongest, nor the race to the swiftest, but, if you're betting, it's a good way to bet.
  • Orders should be accurate, readable and concise, but they never are!
  • Exercises always take place at the junction of four map sheets.
  • Tactics are the opinion of the senior officer present.
  • Flexibility is the substitute for a well thought out plan.
  • If you can't take a joke you shouldn't have joined.
  • Don't assume your enemies demise until you've seen the bodies.
  • Heroics are usually the result of temporary insanity
  • Always dig latrines downstream - the water tastes better.
  • Sniper bullets may be individually hand delivered by a master craftsman, but shrapnel always comes addressed to whom it may concern.
  • If the colonel's bodyguard gets shot and he has to pick a rifleman to replace him its a safe bet he'll always pick the one out of ammo.
  • If at first you don't succeed - dig in.
