Letters to the Editor

by the readers

Lee Hopkinson

Congratulations to all the people who had a hand in producing LW 104 - an excellent read as always and well worth the asking price. I have been a member since January 1992 which I believe was just following the time that Chris Constable took over as Editor. For a long period after that Chris struggled on as Editor, Membership Secretary*, Treasurer and Production Manager* despite difficult personal circumstances - and lets face it, he really ran most of the Association's affairs and did a great job. Following the "Crisis Flyer" sent out in May 1993 the situation improved and a few more people volunteered for vacant posts, but the fact remains that Kenn and Chris are still doing more than one job. Surely members can see that this isn't fair two the people involved, and it's the only reason for the erratic 1992 production schedule of Lone Warrior - Chris and Kenn can only do one thing at a time (and I believe they both have day jobs). I think I speak for all the Committee when I say that none of us are megalomaniacs;, we would gladly tolerate "one person, one job" if only some of the other members would volunteer. The work isn't hard and in my experience the other committee members are only too willing to help in case of difficulty. You can even get by without a computer - I do! So, let's not let this fine ship sink, because it will unless the workload is spread more evenly. Wouldn't it be a nice change to see an editorial that doesn't contain a plea for a new committee member. [* = still doing them].

Having now received a whole two copies of LW I must congratulate you, your fellow workers and the contributors for providing such a wealth of information. I have learn far more since June then I ever have in the past from all the Glossies. I was strictly an ACW man using computer software or miniatures but now I am branching out into WWII Arnhem, boardgames and the like. I fully support what Lance Westlake said about "Operation Archive" [LW 105 page 25] and will volunteer my services (I know you should never volunteer) as a "typist". I would like a Beginners Pack which will provide even more food for thought no doubt.

Andrew Freeman and Henry McClaughlin both said they had difficulty in finding other SWA members at recent conventions. Perhaps it could be that because of the large numbers attending they were "missed in the crush"! When I attend Northern Militaire I shall be carrying a large yellow gas filled balloon with "I do it by myself!!" painted on it, perhaps they could do that? - maybe not. Glad to see the letters in Forum and hope it remains light hearted, topical and interesting. [At this point Bill's letter stopped and he fell off his soapbox and went for a sleep. Thanks for the chuckles your letters and articles give me. Kenn]

Mark Booth

Can anyone explain how I calculate OB and DB in Ice's First Edition "Rolemaster" FRP system? [Mark, what demo games are you considering doing in the North of England 1994?]

Paul Bayliss

If I can be of any help with the print/repro side of things. [Paul, thanks for the offer and we will be in touch. The SWA now uses Girobank Club Account for the funds. Kenn].

Allan Webster

Regarding content. In many ways you will have to use what you get. There are many good articles that would be worth a repeat; the Gussie series springs to mind, or has it been already repeated? There was also "Outpost Zeta" by David Horton and "Adapting the Prototype" by Stephen Allen (I think). They always stick in my mind as delightful and entertaining pieces. Keep up the good work. [Look out for Operation Archives].

John Henderson

Hope you are catching up with the backlog of work on LW. I was intending to volunteer for typing duties but was dissuaded by my wife who pointed out I my ill health and that I am 78 years old and I wouldn't be able to guarantee typing anything by a certain date. I hope you understand as I do concern myself with the LW. Best of luck. [I appreciate the offer and fully understand your problems - I just hope I can produce such a well typed letter should I ever reach your age. Look after yourself. Kenn]

Mark Hannam

I have really enjoyed the last couple of issues of LW. Kenn's new broom has imbibed a certain vibrance to the publication with articles that are both substantial and of relevance to the solo wargamer. The "Greek Campaign of 279 BC by Cainnech Cinaed" had me looking at Ancients seriously once again, whilst David Barnes "Arnhem Lift" is being refought at this moment in time in 6mm, with one of Irregular Miniatures strips of 4 figures replacing each individual 20mm. More power to your elbow Kenn. [Thanks for your kind comments. I'm well aware the editor gets all the credit but I am a member of a really good team - not false modesty, a fact. Enjoyed meeting you and the rest of the lads at the Skelp Smoker. Kenn].

Martin Smith Wanted: "With Pike & Musket" by Charles Wesencraft. Any condition considered. Season's Greetings. [Any chance of some details of what occurred in your local church during the ECW? Kenn]

CLAYMOREGATE! From Mark Hannam

Having been the chief protagonist behind the SWA's attendance at Claymore this summer, I hope fellow members will allow me to make an "uncontrolled advance" in defence of the "Claymoregate Mail"! First Paul Burnell and myself are prominent members of the Lance and Longbow Society in Scotland. It was with the full support of the L&L that we had a table at Claymore at all. Being also keen SWA members it was considered the perfect opportunity to also show the flag for soloists, again with full support from L&L. Ergo, no L&L representation and it is unlikely there would have been any for SWA at all. Secondly, our participation game "10 minutes at Agincourt" was designed incorporating solo systems which hopefully would demonstrate that there was more to solo wargaming than playing DBA\M or resorting to PBM for a challenging game. All our literature, bar two posters, including those placed in the toilets advertised SWA alongside L&L. The accredited SWA flyers we were hoping to give out were to arrive three days late at the wrong address! [English connection take full blame!] Thirdly, SWA badges WERE worn by Paul and myself, my nephew Nick who was the third member of our team is not even a wargamer! Photos are available of the game in action, badges et al. A book of 2nd class stamps secures a signed copy! Incidentally of the shows I managed to attend during 1993, Claymore (Edinburgh), Triples (Sheffield) and SELWIG 92 (Lewisham), the only other members I remember seeing wearing SWA badges were Kenn, Chris Constable, and Paul. Similarly Paul and Kenn were the only members to join me at the appointed SWA meeting point in the bar at Triples. For the last two years, directly after work, I have driven the one and a half hour journey from Aberdeen to Kirriemuir (Skelp) to attend the SWA Smoker, for a couple of hours, with other members. If you want to meet kindred spirits, we are out there... honest! [Arrange Smokers at shows through the pages of LW].
