The Kazar Northern Frontier

A Solo Ancients Scenario

by George Heath

You are Paulinus Gaius Maximus, Governor and Commander of the Northern Frontier of the Kazar Empire. The forces under your command are:

    Legio XXXIII Gemina (Victrix)
    Legio XXXIV Augusta (Triumphalis)
    6 Heavy Cavalry Regiments
    1 Regiment of Horse Archers
    12 Infantry Regiments

Strengths:

    1 Legion 4000 men
1 Heavy Cavalry Regiment 480 men
    Horse Archers 400 men
    1 Infantry Regiment 1200 men

The tribes surrounding your territory are:

VOTADIN - Not especially hostile to the Empire but not trustworthy. It is likely that they could be a problem in the future. Take precautions.

ATTACOTI - Very hostile to the Empire and a block to overland trade with the Chatti.

CHATTI - Extremely friendly with the Empire and eager to trade. The hostility of the Attacoti means that trade routes are by river only.

CERONES - Friendly towards the Empire and unlikely to be a threat.

NOVANTAE - Not friendly towards the Empire but are not likely to be any threat to moves made against the Attacoti.

You currently have three forts and your Headquarters and you must maintain a garrison at each. This must be in line with the relationship of the tribes with the Empire. Working on advise that you have previously given to the Emperor, you are ordered to:

    a) Establish an overland route with the Chatti and,
    b) Defeat and subdue the Attacoti, annexing their lands into the empire.

RULES

The Headquarters garrison must include at least 1/2 Legion.

At least one infantry regiment must be garrisoned at Forts 1, 2, and 3, and at least two cavalry regiments between them.

The Attacoti have five villages - A to E and the warriors of each village have to be soundly defeated. It is not enough to capture the capital village of CARBANTORIGUM.

Each square = 10 miles across. Your strategic moves are 1 move = 5 miles = 3 hours. (4 moves = 1 day's march ie 20 miles).

You must determine your own strategy before going any further.

Part 2

6. You cross the border undetected and throw a decimal dice thereafter:
2nd move - 1,2,3,4,5 - Tribe begins to move to counter-attack.
3rd move - 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 - Tribe begins to move to counter-attack.
4th move - Tribe automatically moves to counter-attack.

7. To determine the Attacoti Strategy throw a D6:

    1. All villages fight individually
    2. Villages C & D combine - others fight individually
    3. Villages B & E combine - others fight individually
    4. Villages A, B & E combine - others individually
    5. Villages B, C, D & E combine
    6. The whole tribe gathers at village 'B'

In the event of warriors being defeated, the survivors will always retreat to 'A' for a last stand.

8. If at the end of a month you have no defeated the whole tribe you may request reinforcements. Dice:

    25: No reinforcements or replacements.
75: Replacements only to bring your units back to full strength.
100 - Replacements as above plus a full Legion.

9. On completion of the campaign you are to submit a full report to the Emperor and the Senate who will judge your conduct accordingly.

ATTACOTI WARRIORS IN EACH VILLAGE

VILLAGEWARBANDSCAVALRYCHARIOTSSLINGS

C3431
D323-
E2223

The above are the number of units for each village and are based on my own campaign fought in 2mm. Anyone wishing to play through this campaign will need to make whatever adjustments are necessary to match their own troops. I would suggest that any adjustments made to the Attacoti will need to be made proportionally to the Imperial forces.
