Soldiers of the Queen

Information on
19th Colonial Rules

from Kenn Hart

I have recently received from Jessica Productions the following publications for review. It takes me ages to get in to a set of rules, usually after many a table top encounter and it would therefore be beyond me to comment in a constructive way on these rules. However, if any member does use them and would like to pass on his/her thoughts to the rest of us please get in touch.

WARGAME RULES FOR THE 1680-1721 PERIOD by Stuart Asquith. In a convenient A5 format, these rules cover Tangier 1680: the Great Turkish Wars 1683-1699 and 1716-1718: Monmouth's Rebellion 1685: the Nine Years War 1688-1697: the Great Northern War 1700-1721: the War of Spanish Succession 1702-1714: the Russo-Turkish War 1710-1712 and the 1689, 1715 and 1719 Jacobite Rebellions and Wars, amongst others. Catalogue Reference: RB 001 Price £3.50. [They came too late! I've just sold my 15mm armies to purchase my Samurai!! Clear, readable print, 30 pages of A5 in a plastic coated cover (great idea). There are 5 pages of figure manufacturers plus details of Partizan Press].

BIG WARS A Set of tactical wargames rules for the period 1880-1914, using 54mm figures by Stuart Asquith and Jack Alexander. For many years now the authors have fought their 1880-1914 period wargames using 54mm "traditional" toy soldiers by these rules. Following an introduction which explains something of the concepts behind both the use of 54mm figures for wargames and the rules themselves, the authors set out the rules in detail. There are sections on the organisation of units; movement; terrain and cover; firing; melee and morale. A list of books for further reading rounds off the text which is illustrated with numerous period illustrations. Catalogue Reference RB 002 Price £3. [26 pages of A4 in a card cover. Print easily readable. Once again details of figure manufacturers and I didn't realise there were so many making this size of figure. Not my period or scale, but I found the rules and photos very interesting. For those into "Big Uns", this is a must for you].

A WARGAMER'S GUIDE TO THE 1882 NILE CAMPAIGN AND THE 1884-1885 GORDON RELIEF EXPEDITION by Stuart Asquith. After looking at the 1882 and 1884-1885 campaigns in details, the author examines the uniforms, organisation and equipment of the British, Egyptian and Dervish armies. The wargaming aspects are outlined and a set of rules is provided, along with wargames scenarios. Some detailed orders of battle round off this concise, illustrated guide, which provides all the wargamer needs. Catalogue Reference CB 001 Price £6.99. [70 A4 pages, print is clear and easily readable, maps are ideal for setting up a wargamer's table top battle, a page of Bibligraphy, details of two 25mm figure manufacturers - basically all you need, along with items from Village Green for a very interesting period. Non-Targe Quiz question; What is unusual about the life size model of Gordon's camel in Brompton Barracks, Chatham, Kent?]
