Uniformology plate: Wurttemburg Infantry

Range Uniformology is a web site that provides you with plates of uniforms taken form Richard Knötel's enormous Uniformkünde. Uniformkünde was published in the late 19th century and was a massive work of some 22 volumes which covered most of the unifor ms of armies from 1700 to 1890ish (I think). Each volume was available for some £100 quite a number of years ago which made obtaining these pictures extraordinarily difficult. Fortunately for us some Texans have set up a company where you can obtain copies of these plates which cover most European countries of the 17th and 18th centuries. Most pleasing was the opportunity to get the Napoleonic Wurttemburg plates, something I had been after for some 10 years of so. The wait was worth it.

Quality and Design The plates come in an A4 sized booklet with has a cloth tape binder. The plates themselves are colour photocopies of the originals which are separated by a thin sheet for protection. The plates are 6"by 9" or so in size with the only text being the original German at the bottom of the print. Each print has four to five soldiers on it showing the various regiments and troop types. My Wurttemburgers had line and light infantry, Cavalry, Guard, Artillery of different periods during the Napoleonic era.Despite being only photocopies, Uniformology have produced a well presented booklet of much valued and rare prints.

Cost and Availability The cost of the booklet varies dependant on which one you choose. Prices vary from around $20-$55 US with postage and packaging of $12 US.

My Wurttemburg book of 15 prints cost me $33.95 US overall which worked out to be in the vicinity of $50 Aus. The booklet arrived after one month after sending the email order. While this is a little pricey considering a colour copy only costs a $1 or so, I think that the non availability of plates long out of print makes them more than worth the money I paid.
