H&M Wargaming Scenarios

Scenario 4

by David Osborne

Part of a series of wargaming scenarios designed by David Osborne for the Horse & Musket competition at CANCON '98. The scenarios were loosely based on historical Napoleonic engagements or incidents. Each should take about two hours to complete and provide a good 'test' of your generalship!

FROM CANCON 98:
Forces total: 1,500 points each side.

SIDE A

One brigade is deployed on (or near) steep hills, with all troops within area 600paces by 600 paces, with centre of one side of square being side CD centre point. Remainder of side A forces enter in turn 1 manouevre phase, along table edge AB, but not within 300 paces of short table edges. Order of deployment, by brigade, from left to right, is to be decided and written down before player B set up.

SIDE B

Sets up following initial deployment of Side A on table forces. Deployment zone is split :300 paces along long edge by 600 paces along short edge from corner C; and 300 paces along long edge by 600 paces along short edge from corner D. There is no need to have troops in both deployment zones.

ORDERS

Side A: Drive enemy from field.
Side B: Destroy enemy forces.

PLAYER A HAS FIRST TURN.

DESIGNERS NOTES

This scenario was inspired by the situation of the Arapiles at the battle of Salamanca. In the actual battle, there is an opening skirmish where the French secure one hill and he British the other, with a later assault by a Portuguese brigade against the French held hill.

Obviously the scenario does not actually match Salamanca, not even geographically, because I added the streams to give some extra defensive capability to either side. One of the people who played this scenario commented that it was like the 'Strategy of the Central Position' diagram in Chandler's "Campaigns of Napoleon".

This scenario was not actually play tested before he competition. However, it seemed to work out very well in practice.
