I recently had opportunity to revisit the U. S. Army Ordnance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. The Museum is a feast for armor enthusiasts with over 260 vehicles and artillery pieces. In all, the indoor and outdoor portions of the museum house over 8000 items. The indoor museum houses a wide ranging collection of small arms and infantry weapons, as well as, a few vehicles and a gift shop. The outdoor museum consists of a 26 acre tank park and the mile of tanks. The tank park is home to weapons ranges widely from a WW1 Whippet to "Leopard", the WW2 German railway gun, to Tigers, Panthers, a Somua S35, through the modern era with the M1, a T72, a Bradley, and a BMP2 among others. There is also the mile of tanks which consists of American vehicles dating from the 1930's to the 1960's. For those of you interested in supporting the museum, you can join The Ordnance Museum Foundation, Inc. The $25 base membership entitles you to six copies of Museum Ordnance a high gloss magazine of about 30 pages containing articles and black and white photos about items related to the museum. The museum is planning to build a 300,000 sq. ft. addition to house many of the vehicles in the near future as many of the vehicles are suffering the effects of weather. The Ordnance Museum Foundation, Inc. can be reached at P. O. Box 688, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD 21005. The museum is located on SR. 22 near Aberdeen Maryland about twenty minutes east of Baltimore and open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and closed on national Holidays except Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day.
