Origins 2005

Special Perks

by Steve Smith, Origins 2005 HOT Director

Great Lakes Members will again be able to attend Origins (June 30 - July 3) at a big discount, get their badge quick and get 20% off any Origins merchandise!

Here's the deal: You must pre-register on-line at: www.originsgames.com before May 25 AND send me an e-mail with your badge number (sven_46516@msn.com). Also, as part of your discount, you must volunteer for a couple hours during the convention, usually working at the HOT desk -- which is usually a great time in itself! For this, you will receive a badge at half-price, pick it up at a separate registration desk (by-passing regular registration lines). You also get 20% off on merchandise, too (but don't buy their lanyards -- get your Great Lakes lanyard at the HOT desk!).

And of course, there are is the usual great perks for Games Masters, too! This includes the normal free weekend badges and even accommodations, if you run enough events for enough people. Here are the GM requirements for those participating in the HOT Program:

  • Regular HOT GM: Three 4-hour games for 6 players (the formula is 3x4x6= 72 player hours). Or, one hour at the HOT Desk staff equals 8 Player hours.
  • Special HMGS Great Lakes GM Deal: As the "Host Club," we get an even better deal -- half the requirements! So, only 36 player hours are necessary. However, they must support the Miniatures Headquarters desk with a minimum of two hours volunteer time.

So, get your events in by Jan. 10! If possible, go to the Origins website and list your game there, then send me an e-mail letting me know that you did it. Make sure you identify yourself as a HMGS Great Lakes member when you register. If you can't go to the website to list your event, send the details (see GM Form this issue) to me

Origins is the biggest gaming event in our area, and is always a great time, so make plans now to attend!

Oh, and here's a final note from Pete Panzeri: "This year, we need GMs can run smaller and shorter games (say, 4-8 players, 3-4 hours each). In the past, the huge, long "Mega Games" have often failed to fill up. For most Origins gamers, it seems, there are too many other fun things happening at the con to get stuck in a monster game all day or night."
