Drums Along the Maumee 5 Report

by Doug Johnson

This was another great time for gamers here in NW Ohio. Overall attendance was down a bit, but we still finished in the black. As always, our GMs created some fabulous events for our gamers to enjoy. The variety of scenarios offered something for everyone. Steve Smith soldiered on with the DBA tournament, again this year, and Gordon Andrews returned with his stunning "55 Days at Peking." We had eight events on Friday and 25 on Saturday. Most had enough players, but as I said earlier, our numbers were down from last year.

I would like to mention every GM and thank them for making our job so easy. These guys really love what they do and I am amazed every year when I see their table set-ups and new game ideas. Our first official Drums 6 meeting was held the Wednesday after Drums 5 at Ralphie's. We will trim some expenses, but keep the extra two rooms for Saturday. I was told by many people how nice it was to have the extra rooms on Saturday. We actually had "gamer-size" space between the tables. The cute girl was back again this year with her hot-dog cart and did a brisk business keeping our gamers from having to leave for lunch. This service helps our attendees and the hotel profits from it as well. Maybe next year we can get her to wear a chainmail bikini!

Everyone on the Drums staff would have been happier if we had 20 or 30 more people attend this year. Several reasons have been cited for the drop in numbers. Capcon in Columbus moved to our weekend, and another gaming convention was on in Lansing. There are other possibilities, too. Some of our gamers have been called up to active duty or re-deployed. The economy and fuel prices probably caused some to stay home. Personally, I think maybe the "Honey Do" list kept many on a ladder or cleaning garages rather then pushing lead. Drums 6 is May 20-21, 2005. Find a buddy and share the expenses!

"Muster on the Maumee" at Fort Meigs June 19-20

Romans, Vikings and combat soldiers of modern wars will all be encamped at the fort for the June 19-20 weekend. Great photo opportunities and live fire demonstrations. Last year, the Germans brought a real Kubelwagen and their MG42s. The site is open Sat. 9:30am - 7pm, Sunday 9:30am to 5pm. Food vendors are on site and there are picnic areas available, too. Get up here and enjoy this weekend event!
