Stielgranate 41 Stick Bomb
37mm Pak Conversion

by Mike Reese

Black Tree Design makes a nice German 37mm anti-tank gun for your miniature World War II German Army. Due to its failure to affect heavy British, French and Soviet tanks, it had been identified inside the German army as the "Army's Door-knocker." This is despite its use in Poland, Belgium, Holland, Norway, Denmark, France, Greece, North Africa, the Balkans, and the Soviet Union. The German response was to introduce the Pak 38, Pak 40, 88mmPak and eventually a 128mm Pak.

However, there were still a lot of 37mm and 47mm anti-tank guns in the German Army. In 1943, the Stielgranate 41 was introduced. This round is placed over the gun barrel of the Pak 35/36 (and Czech 37mm and 47mm) and a blank round is used to fire it. Not real effective range-wise, but it was better then using a 37mm armor piercing round.

How to Make One

You need the following equipment:

    1. Pin vise with 1/16th inch drill.
    2. Sharp hobby knife.
    3. Hobby saw
    4. Super glue and plastic glue.
    5. Snippers
    6. Ruler

You need the following parts:

    1. 1/35 Panzerfaust 30 or 60
    2. Games Workshop "Hunter Killer" anti-tank missile
    3. Aluminum, plastic or brass tube 1/16" in diameter

Procedure:

    1. Cut off the warhead from the Panzerfaust
    2. Cut the warhead off the missile (old version which is now being replaced by GW) just behind the front fins.
    3. Cut the warhead off the front of the missile at the point it starts to curve to a point - 3/16" from the front of the fin.
    4. Clip the fins so they are 2/3 their current size which is 1/16" off the front and 1/16" off the height of the fin. Do all four fins.
    5. Use the pin vise to drill a hole in both ends of the missile 1/16" in diameter. Widen the rear hole slightly with your hobby knife.
    6. Glue the warhead to the front of the missile section using plastic glue.
    7. Cut the 1/16" tube to get a 5/16 inch long section of tube. Glue this to the end of the missile using Super Glue, or if plastic tube, plastic glue.
    8. Let it dry. Undercoat and then paint. You can paint it either dark gray or German yellow. The color of the nose of the round is probably dark green with a white tip. ("Probably" because I have no definite information on it -- just a black and white picture showing the front of the warhead a slightly different shade (or shadow?) with the fuse a light color).
