2nd GL Big Battle Tourney

by Mike Stelzer

We had 10 people turn out for the 2nd Annual Great Lakes Big Battle DBA Tournament, held at the Tin Soldier in Dayton, this year. There were a great set of games played in this tournament. I think turn out may have been even better if it hadn't been Labor Day weekend. The tournament used 2.1 rules with one change -- a 32"x64" board. All went smoothly until the end, and that was my fault and not a player's.

The results were:
Mike Demana (Khmer II/23), 3-0
Tom Graves (Greco-Bactrian II/36a), 2-1
Paul Potter (Ghaznavid III/63b), 2-1
Allen Sams (Early Hungarian III/67b), 2-1
David Zecchini (Alex Imperial and Classical Indian II/15&II/3), 2-1
Jason Stelzer (Han Chinese II/41), 1-1-1
Tim Ryan (Alans II/58), 1-2
Jay Bevington (Later Carthaginian II/32), 1-2
Lonnie Cornett (Sassanid Persians with Huns II/69&II/80), 0-1-2
Bob Boggs (Early Imperial Romans II/56), 0-3

The competition was fun to watch, and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Many comments were made about the setup rules and most who had played BBDBA before liked the 2.0 system better than 2.1. I do feel the scoring system for BBDBA and victory conditions need work, many of the games were boring towards the end with players just trying to kill enough to win.

Now for the mistake, I announced Mike as the winner and proceeded to call off second and third, while forgetting I hadn't written down the 1st place. I skipped over Tom and went to Paul for second place. The above rankings are the correct ones. Tom received a duplicate 2nd prize, later. Thanks again to all who showed up, and hope to see at the next 2004 BBDBA Tournament, which I believe will be in Toledo at Glass City Games.
