Happenings in the "Old Northwest"

by Doug Johnson

I feel very fortunate to live in the Toledo area. Fort Meigs is now the center for Military History in Ohio. The construction of the new complex has established this location as an important part in the future of Ohio. With the good news, also comes some bad. The Ohio Historical Society has had to cut many programs this year due to State budget problems. The new facility will fare better than other sites owned by the OHS. Some smaller, unimproved sites may be closed completely until funding can be restored.

The schedule of events at the fort has been steady since the Grand Opening in May. I have attended several of these, one I highlighted last issue. One of my favorite new programs is the Military History Roundtable, held on the third Thursday of each month. The lectures are always very interesting and the speakers well informed. I unfortunately had to miss the one in July due to the G-Fest convention in Chicago. The August lecture will be given by historian Gerry Altoff about the Battle of Lake Erie. In September, professor Randy Buchman of Defiance College will speak on Little Turtle, Miami Chief. The lectures have always been full and made up of people of all ages. We plan to set up a display to promote HMGSGL and the hobby of military miniatures. Can you think of a better location to fly the flag and attract new members? Dr. Nelson has always been open to any of our ideas and willing to do anything to helps us.

Increasing the ranks in Great Lakes has always been a priority of the Board and many concerned members. Our people have been doing a great job of recruiting at the Summer conventions. We have about 300+ on the books now. Our regional conventions and one-day gaming events have been successful and growing each year. We are on the right track. Steady improvement on enrollment and member services will guarantee the continued growth of our Chapter. I like to think of Great Lakes as an extended family -- not one on Jerry Springer -- just a regular family. We all can help. Remember, it takes a village to raise a child!

Tip of the Month

If you are looking for ways to make terrain for your gametable, don't overlook Blueboard. This closed-foam material is easy to shape and takes acrylic paint well. Look for some samples at ATC!
