Persian Bowfire
Holds Off Greek Fleet

More Reflections on Drums 3

by Jack E. Shaw, Sr.

The Friday Ancients Naval game at Drums had six players. The Greeks ships were captained by Mike Demana, Tom Bryant and David Reape, the Persian ones by Steve Smith and his wife Leslie. Their Egyptian ally ship was captained by Bud Hunter.

There were heavy causalities on both sides. However, Steve never lost a man in the battle. Each side had a ship surrender, but the Persians recrewed the Greek ship and resumed battle. The remaining Greek ships hoisted sail and attempted to sail away. Persian Victory.

The Saturday morning game had 12 players, using my 10 ships and Bud Hunter's two. Again, it was a very bloody battle. The Persians used their archers well and inflicted causalities on the Greeks. One Greek ship only had its captain left and was soon captured. One of the Greek ships found its mark and rammed a Persian vessel, sending it to the bottom of the Mediterranean. This game was also a Persian victory, though.

In both games, the Persians did what they needed to: Stand off and use missile fire. The Greeks need to ram or grapple so they can send their hoplites into melee with the Persian archers, then the outcome would have been different.

I think everyone had a good time and liked the game. Coming soon from my sick mind: Galley Races! It's like chariot races with a twist.
