Drums 3

Notes and Reflections By Colbys

by Jim Thomasson

Convention #3 is history, and we have many good memories from our annual gathering run by Great Lakes and the Colby Street Irregulars.

  • Location - A new and better site, as we thought. Much more space and easier entry into the convention hotel location.
  • Time - Earlier games being run on Friday. Two events were scheduled and run. Next year, we expect to begin around 1 pm and have a full slate for the early attendees. Why go to three days when we have not used all of our time on two?
  • Dealers - Some of our favorite Dealers once again came to support our effort, and several new ones joined in after word was spread.
  • Variety - more than in the past -- Ancient naval, 100-Years War, a beautiful Pirates game, AWI, War of 1812, the Toledo War (round 3), ACW land and sea, Wild West, Anglo-Sikh War, WW I naval, WW II land and sea, Vietnam Air Cavalry, Desert Storm, a huge 15mm Leipzig Napoleonics battle with 4,500 painted troops on a 40 foot plus battlefield!
  • Attendees - We had more gainers, 100+ came and enjoyed our games, Dealers and good talk and the late night Colonel Colby Mood Music!
  • Dock Crew - The new Dealers being surprised by the unloading crew and help with setup. We even loaded them up after the con, aiding their return home.
  • Regional Help - Years ago, we thought we could produce a quality convention in the Toledo area, but knew we would need "outside" talent. Game Masters from Great Lakes, MichiCon, Pro or Con, SpartaCon in Lansing, Wayne's Legion, Glass City Games, RLBPS and Miniature Dot Corn all came to help.
  • Hotel Help - a more user-friendly site -- large gaming and dealer area, room to move around the tables and even a Hotdog cart cruising the event room!
  • Convention Help - many Colby Street Irregulars had a hand in this years fine show. Also, we thank the GL Board who shared the Registration desk with us, Mike Reese for his 200 plus photos, members who donated prizes for our "12 Minute Raffle", the brews that showed up magically Saturday night, Vatican Enterprises for the free rulers, the Pro or Con guys (where the Colby's were trying to sell Drum's rulers for a quarter!), the first ever Drum's T -Shirt Sale, and the Enus Brothers fro their crazy gathering around a card game!
  • Coming from the era of pencil, paper and phone calls, we are amazed at how Internet Communication can create contacts to host a good game convention.

We still rely on that personal touch in filling our show, though. We know almost every single person who is important to Drum's success. Our motto for Drums is "Quality, not quantity!"

We have really enjoyed putting on Drums here in Toledo. We salute Great Lakes and all our friends that have come to share in good battles. To those who have not attended, we urge you to mark your calendars -- Drums 4 is May 16-17, 2003. Join us! You won't regret it!
