GL Member Wins `World Cup' of DBA

Origins 2002

by Jim Williams

This tournament was fought using DBA 2.0 with the NASAMW Village rule. It was set up for 16 players and was conducted in a "World Cup" format. The players were divided into groups and would then play everyone in their group. The winners of each group as determined by win-loss record then point differential would move on to a single elimination championship round. That was in a perfect world with 16 players.

The turnout was lighter with only 10 players. This required some fiddling with the format. In the end, the players were divided up into two groups of five, meaning all players would play four games and have one bye round. The rounds went smoothly and the first five were complete in a little under five hours. The championship round took less than an hour, so the entire event ran less than six hours. The championship round pitted the two clear winners of the groups and a consolation round pitted the runners-up.

The Championship match between Tim Monaghan and Steve Smith was narrowly won by Steve, 4-3. Jason Mirosovich defeated Patrick Carroll in the consolation round.

The tournament went well, and I won't need to make many changes next year. I am conveniently aligned to run another tournament at about anytime ... if I can get my boss to cooperate.
