Siege of Augusta

'Best Secret'

by David S. Doty

Last weekend, Rich Masse and I made our annual trek to Augusta, GA, for Siege of Augusta, sponsored by the very good people in HMGS Mid South. As usual, Jim Birdseye and Paul Elkin were more than gracious hosts to all. The games were plentiful and very nicely displayed.

Mid South's fearless leader, Maj. Bill Harting, put on a well received World War II game for the western front and his Sherman tanks were roughly handled by Panthers and Tigers. Too bad the air cover didn't show up! Rich put on a Seven Years War assault by Russians on a town held by some Prussians. Too bad Fritz was there, as he now a "guest?" of the Russian army waiting to be ransomed. Looks like Maria Theresa gets Silesia back in this version of history, anyway. The usual Armati tournament was run all day Saturday, and as we pulled out, looked like it would go on for most of Sunday as well. The continuing dearth of American Civil War and Napoleonic games continued, though, with only one or two games from these periods being run at all.

This convention is one of the best kept secrets in all of HMGS and anyone from the frozen north who ventures down south for this show will not ever regret the trip. These folks fit the stereotype of southern hospitality at its very best.
