Calling for Volunteers

by David K. van Hoose

It is 1898 and you are standing in the Menger Hotel, 204 Alamo Plaza, San Antonio, TX. Teddy Roosevelt is recruiting the Rough Riders for a great adventure in Cuba. Well, pinch yourself, it is 2002 and it is time to step forward and volunteer to help at Advance the Colors 2002. It may not be as great of an adventure as Cuba was, but I am sure we will have lots fun.

On Sept. 13-15, we will be hosting Advance the Colors 2002, in Springfield, OH, at the Holiday Inn, 383 E. Leffel Ln. As your convention director, I am calling for volunteers to take on convention staff positions so that we can all ensure a safe and enjoyable event. As a member of Great Lakes, I know you are interested in assisting the chapter. The time is now to take one step forward and volunteer for this great adventure.

Do not worry about not having done this in the past, we will teach you everything you need to know. All volunteers need to either write or e-mail a short note with the position they are interested in filling, to David K. van Hoose, 10518 Brookview Drive, Carmel, IN 46032, or e-mail: davidkvh@aol.com. You can also call me at (317) 581 8840.

The following positions need to be filled:

On Site Event Coordinator (five volunteers needed)

We need five on site Event Coordinators (i.e. Friday evening; Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, Saturday evening, and Sunday). The duties of an event coordinator are:

  • Assist the Game Masters in finding their table.
  • Make sure the events get started on time.
  • Make sure that the Game Masters cleans up the table on time.
  • Ensure each game master gets a GM Packet.
  • Answer questions concerning upcoming events.
  • Help the game master fill their games by directing ATC guests to open games.

Front Desk Volunteer (30 volunteers needed)

We have 30 slots for Front Desk assistance. Each slot lasts 2 hours during the business hours of the front desk on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The duties of a Front Desk Volunteer are:

  • Assisting members checking into the convention
  • Taking in funds for the convention, membership, T-shirt, and raffle.
  • Basic record keeping.

If you are interested in Volunteering, please contact me. I am hoping to have all positions filled before August 20, 2002.
