HMGS-GL Recruitment Committee Report

Accomplishments

by Great Lakes President Tom Bryant

I thought I should update everybody as to what the recruitment committee has come up with at this point. As some of you are aware Darryl Smith is leaving his position as Recruitment Officer. We all wish him well. At this point, it is a good time to look at what we have accomplished and are planning to do. I'm also sending this out as a sort of recruiting call for the recruiting committee. Yes, folks that's right! We need some folks who can provide some ideas and input. We are also going to need some folks who can give us some "sweat equity," too, at some time in the future.

Darryl and Scott Mingus are going ahead with plans to put on a show at the American Civil War Expo in Mansfield, OH, in May, 2002. We are also planning on materials for use as an aid to entry into the hobby and to tell those already in the hobby how to promote the hobby.

We have prioritized our tasks as recruiting members and promoting the hobby. The recruitment effort is of primary importance. We are looking into plans to use existing entities to assist us. These include the following:

  • Historical Re-enactments
  • Historical Sites and Museums
  • Historical Fairs
  • Hobby Shops
  • Plastic Model Shows (IPMS)
  • Military Collectibles shows
  • Toy Soldier Shows
  • Game Conventions

Other points we have noticed are that there are three things required for the successful growth of a gaming community: Players; Groups; and Stores. There obviously need to be players in the region for the hobby to start. Gaming groups, while not strictly necessary, help a great deal in maintaining contacts and supporting the hobby on a local level. The final and critical component is storefront support in some form. Players need to have a local place to play their games, buy their miniatures and rules, and just to talk about the hobby. A storefront can provide all of these things.

With this in hand, we will need the following information to move forward:

  • Membership Information (Accurate List)
  • Groups list both formal and informal
  • Store lists. This should include stores that both stock and are happy to special order miniatures gaming supplies.

With this information we can begin formulating the brochures and finalizing our plans for recruiting new members and promotion of the hobby. Ultimately, we need the help of every member. This assistance does not need to be great. Running a demo game in public once and a while will be a great help. Bringing interested friends and family will also help. It is an effort that we need to all engage in. With a little help from everybody, we can continue to grow and prosper.
