Lost Boat Service Remembers WWII Vets

Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum

by Tom Bryant

I'd like to invite all of you who can make it to the Lost Boat Service at the Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum in Muskegon, MI, Sunday May 27. The service will be held at 11 am on the USS Silversides (SS-236), located at 1346 Bluff St. on the Muskegon Lake channel.

The special guest speaker will be Commander of Submarine Group Ten of the Atlantic Force, RADM Richard P. Terpstra. Admiral Terpstra commanded the USS Dallas (SSN-700) from 1990-1993.

On Monday afternoon, Memorial Day, there will be a similar remembrance service downtown at the LST-393 located at the West Michigan Mart and Dock. Guest speakers will be Capt. Robert Jornlin, the commander of LST-325, which made its journey home to Mobile, AL, from the Greek Navy last winter. This was a special voyage for both the captain and crew, as they were all World War II and Korean War veterans. Also attending will be Jack Neadelmeyer, the son of the designer of the LST.

I highly recommend attending these events. It is well worth the trip to visit these boats and meet some of the men that made history aboard them.
