Drums Staff Answers Questions

Convention

by Jim Thomasson, Colby Street Irregulars

We would like to thank all the Dealers, superb game masters, and the staff from HMGS Great Lakes for making Drums along the Maumee. The Colbys appreciated all the time, effort and help that was given to make this event a plus, and to help create a window for next year. We have always felt that Toledo could run this area in gaming, with lots of help from old and new friends, we did just that.

To answer questions on the Convention we heard:

1) Lots of WW II ?
We went with above average GMs. We asked them what THEY wanted to run, not what we wanted. They ran events that THEY enjoyed. Variety will come, with more time and more superb GMs.

2) Two rooms for Games?
We were under very restricted space limitations for our first con, we used what we had.

3) Two Dealer Rooms
We needed the extra room to allow all our Dealers room for their wares. We did not want to short their frontage. It was a mistake NOT to have all Dealers in one room. We are going to fix that.

4) Our site and preparations
We only had two sites to begin with, we took the easiest to use and find. Our staff worked on the mechanics of this con for almost 20 months. The Three Stooges did yeoman work long into the calender. Hats off to my buddies -- Tim Weber and Doug Johnson and to the rest of the Colby Street Irregulars -- it was a labor of interest and great fun.

5) Gladiator
We went this Wednesday, others at the con walked next door and watched it Saturday night. I felt it was a good flick, and I teach world history to boot.

6) Demos for interest
Try them anywhere, tough to get historical onlookers anywhere. My high school game club meets every other week, mini's come out and they are thrilled. The Games Workshop factor is there, no doubt. I teach them some rules for some Space Combat (Starship Troopers type ) and next time we use the same rules to do the French and Indian War. It does work out nicely.

7) After the Con
We did take the guided Tour of Fort Meigs in Perrysburg. All that went said it was a fitting finish to our con.

8) To all the Game Masters
If we would have had about 25 more bodies, all games would haverun. We deferred some of ours to run yours, you spent the gas and we were glad to have you come. Next year: More bodies, we promise! Our flyer campaign and e-mail attack was just not powerful enough.

Thanks to all that came and enjoyed!
