Piquet 'All Right'

by Tony Teal

We played an 1864 ACW game using Piquet. Piquet is a controversial set of rules -- it is not universally liked even in our club. The May 13 game was my first impression of the rules. I thought it was all right and quite interesting.

The rules randomize the turn sequence in a way that I haven't seen in other sets of rules. We had a small, four-player game. the other three guys were experienced Piquet gamers, that probably heped the game go better. Also, I think a four-player game is ideal for Piquet, since you rarely have to wait very long before a card comes up that allows you to make a decision.

Certainly, Piquet isn't a solid rules set for accurate battlefield simulation, but it was (in my short experience) a fun, playable system very different from most rules. David Van Hoose (whom I think recently was elected to the Great Lakes board, right? We don't talk politics during our games...) was one of the experienced Piquet players lasst Saturday. He mentioned his interest in running a Piquet American Civil War campaign this year. Anyone interested in participating in a campaign can contact David at 10518 Brookview Dr., Carmel, IN 46032.
