Capcon

Historical Gaming Reborn

by Darryl R. Smith

When I first attended Capcon several years ago, it was one of the best conventions in the region for historical gaming. Over the past few years, though, historical miniatures gaming had grown a bit sparse at Capcon. It seemed both the number of events and the number of gamers to fill those events had been dropping. This year, though, it seems there was a rebirth of miniatures gaming at Capcon, as well as two quality dealers to sell us wary buyers many different products.

I only attended the convention on Saturday, and was busy hosting an ACW event along with Scott Savory and Matt Davidson, but I was able to look around a bit at the historical events that were transpiring. The Velas Brothers were there in full force, running a 25mm AWI event, as well as a 25mm Spanish-American War game, both events using Piquet as rules. Their events are well done with beautiful figures and well-done terrain, and were popular items at this year's show. I saw many folks participating in the NASAMW DBM tournament, a yearly standard organized by Richard Hartley. Let's see...what else? Modern micro-armor (Great Lakes member Ted Wade), Ancients using Melees Glorious (Great Lakes member David Gundt), World War II naval (Great Lakes member Bob Wicks), and quite a few others I didn't have a chance to look over (my apologies, I wish I'd had time to look at everything!). But one thing I did notice, there were many events going on at the same time (around 10 am or so), and all seemed to be well-attended!

As for the dealer area, The Soldiery was there with their many historical product lines. A new face appeared in the dealer area this year, The Quartermaster, who displayed quite a variety of Falcon UK figures. I can't tell you how they did in sales, but for the first time in a few years, there was some variety in the dealer area for the historical gamer. The Quartermaster was kind enough to provide two 50-figure packs of infantry, which were awarded to Luke Ellis, a young man who is getting into Historical miniatures. Also, The Soldiery was kind enough to provide Scott and I buttons and coupons for running our event. Thanks to both of these fine dealers for supporting our event!

Folks, if this year's edition of Capcon is an indication of how it will be in the future, I would suggest making this convention a regular stop on your schedule, again.
