The Battle for Siegfried Line; WW II Western Front Battle
During the closing months of 1944, sections of Germany's Western line of defense, the Westwall, had been breached. Fortress Aachen had fallen in October and Allied forces continued to probe for weak points. These probing actions and the subsequent German counter attacks resulted in many fire fights during this pre-"Battle of the Bulge" time period. Relive the action as the Allies try (as the song goes) "to hang out the wash on the Siegfried Line!" Feature cliffs, hills, pateaus, fields, swamps and woods. Plenty of varied terrain. There are wide paths similar to the armor trails found at Army bases. Contact Lorrie Farr, e-mail: gruppen@aol.com. The 8th Guards Mechanized Coros, in cahoots with the Indiana Reenactors Society, announces: The first OSTFRONT battle at the Rensselaer Battlefield! We would like everyone to come out and participate at perhaps the greatest new battle site in the Midwest!" Located in Rensselaer, IN, (80 miles south of Chicago and about 100 miles north of Indianapolis, off of 1-65), this site is over 800 acres of mostly flat farmland, sectioned off by large drainage ditches, solid dirt roads, and several wooded areas, ponds, and grassy clearings. We will also have the opportunity to construct permanent earthworks (trenches and bunkers) away from the farmed areas. Bring your shovels and prepare to dig in! This will be an open 3-day event to all Soviet and German reenactors. We are striving for everyone to participate in setting up authentic, period camps, realistic tactical simulations using an adapted "Graef System," open terrain combat maneuver for both infantry and mechanized forces. Because of the nature of the Graef System, engineers/sappers and snipers are to be used! Please contact us if you have a special impression such as this (you get more points for the battle that way!). Since the nature of the site is open, we highly encourage you to bring vehicles of any type -- this is ideal terrain! (Please let us know what types of Western-front vehicles you will bring, and special arrangements can be made for reimbursement on hauling). We will start each side out separately for registration, encampment, and the tactical -- Red Army on one side, the Germans on the other. We will be posting a map of the site and where encampment and registration wwill be held. Contact: Scott Downing, 5849A Brett Dr., Fort Knox KY 40121.
