More than a dozen generals competed in a De Bellis Antiquitatis (DBA) tournament at the recent Origins'99 convention. The tournament lasted four rounds. During each round, the players were assigned to one of eight prearranged battles. This permitted each player to take part in four of the eight historical battles. The eight battles presented at Origins were:
Dave Zechini won the tournament, despite an 8-point loss as the Macedonians at Cynoscephalae in the 3rd round vs. Curtis Wright. Dave won victories at Crimisus as Syracuse, at Nechtansmere as the Picts, and as the Crusaders at Arsuf. Dave's victory at Arsuf was over 2nd place finisher Ron Holtz. Ron had entered the final round in first. His defeat dropped him into a respectable 2nd place finish. Congratulations to both Dave and Ron. The winner was determined by their win-loss-tie record. Ties counted as half a win and half a loss. Dave and Ron were joined by Jonathan Carryer with records of 3-1-0. The first tie breaker was points scored. Dave garnered 24 points to Ron's 22 and Jonathan's 20. It needed, the next tie breaker would have been fewest points given up. Points were awarded for elements destroyed, generals killed, camps captured and bonuses for victories or ties. This was the sixth ancients tournament run in as many years by Mike Demana and Terry Hollern. This is the third year for the "historical battles" format. They plan on doing it again at Origins 2000. (Prizes were awarded for 1st-8th place and were provided by The Soldiery, Inc.)
* Participated in the 3rd and 4th rounds only.
