Siege of Augusta Con 1999

Hot Weather, News On Hand

by David S. Doty

The Siege of Augusta was held on Jan 8-10 this year at the Sheraton Augusta Hotel deep in the heart of dixie. As usual, Jim Birdseye and Maj. Bill Harting of HMGS Mid-South did an outstanding job of making everyone welcome, even us Yankees who showed up. There were a wide variety of periods gamed this year, with surprisingly, Napoleonics the most numerous.

However, the two standout games weren't Naps, but rather an American Civil War and a gorgeous Revolutionary War game. The Revolutionary War game was put on by Dave Bonk using "Carnage and Glory" computer-moderated rules. It featured the buildings of Dave Paddock and a host of beautifully-painted 25mm figures. The ACW game was also in 25mm and debuted a new farm house from Mr. Paddock. When the ACW gamers see this one, they will have a hard time going home without one of their own.

It has been confirmed that when Hasbro bought Avalon Hill last year they destroyed all of the games that AH was paying royalties on to the game designers. This includes "Napoleon's Battles." There is some good news to report, though. First, Emperors Headquarters still has some left in stock. The price is $35 and (as of the Siege of Augusta) there were six left on hand. So, if your local hobby store is out, there may still be a place to go and get one. The second bit of good news is that the author of N13 apparently had a clause in the his contract with AH. It stated that if the rules went out of print for one year, the rights reverted back to the author. So, in about a year, we may see a re- release of this popular rule set.

On another rules note, there is a set called Revolutions in Empire being developed. This is really Empire 7. So, if you don't like Empire, be careful before you plunk down your money. The early news flash on this version is that the charts may be even more complex than they were before and that the person behind all of this effort is more of a Francophile than even Bob Mills (GDWC member).

This is a highly recommended show for any snow-tired Yankee to attend. The hotel rates are CHEAP, and the accommodations, gaming and weather are just what you need after a foot snow and ice have been dumped on you.
