Brits Hit "Sword Beach" on D-Day2

Command Decision 3 Scenario

by Matt Davidson

I put this "Command Decision 3" organization together some time ago as a result of an inquiry on the CD Mailer. There were a couple versions put forth and this one is what I came up with. I was going to send this in to the "Command Post Quarterly," but I decided to send it to "The Herald" first. It is almost too small to do with CD, but I thought I'd translate it into CD terms anyway. I originally wrote this for CD2, but it should work just as well or even better with CD3.

The references to snipers are from the CD Mailer, and I'm sure they can be found in the archive section of the CD Mailer web site: . CD3 doesn't have sniper rules, but some ways were found to represent them, such as forcing morale checks on a particular stand or pinning a command stand, etc. For those interested in Command Decision, I highly recommend this site for those with "on-line" capability. For those who aren't, I recommend "Command Post Quarterly," published by Emperor's Press / Old Glory. Both the web site and the magazine make use of direct contact with the game designer, Frank Chadwick.

Much of my information was pulled from "Commandos and Rangers of World War I I" by James Ladd (ISBN: 0-312-15167-5). 1 would be interested in feedback from anyone who gives this organization a try.

Now, storm the beaches!

1st Commando Brigade (Sword Beach):
3rd, 4th, 6th, 45th(R M) battalion, and two troops of Free French from the 10th Commando battalion.

Also 41st(RM) Commando battalion from 4th Commando Brigade.
Troop Quality: Veteran, Morale: 10

1st CDO Bde., HQ with:

    1 x cdo command stand
    1 x cdo staff stand

Each CDO bn. HQ with:

    1 x cdo command stand
    1 x cdo support stand

5x Troops each with:

    2x recon cdo infantry/weapons stands

1 x Heavy weapons troop, with:
    1 x cdo command stand
    1 x cdo 3" mortar stand(bn. weapon)
    1 x cdo M MG stand (1 /2 ROF)

NOTES:

1) If recon cdo infantry/weapons stand is broken down into patrols then one patrol is recon cdo infantry and one patrol is recon cdo weapons.

2) All recon cdo infantry/weapons stands have engineer capability.

3) Each troop carries 1/2 ton of ammo for the 3" mortar section.

4) For those who want to use snipers, each recon cdo infantry/weapons stand has sniper capability.

5) Transportation is by LCA (initial waves), and LCI-s (follow on waves).

6) The Free French would be the same, except for no bn. HQ of their own, no heavy weapons troop, only two troops, and they would be subordinate to the Bde. HQ.

7) The 4 st (RM) cdo would be independent of the 1 st CDO Bde. as they are part of the 4th CDO Bde. and landed on Sword Beach because their primary mission was canceled.

8) Morale ratings for the Free French, I made same as British (motivated)

9) Just for clarification: CDO Bde. = Commando Brigade, CDO bn. Commando battalion, cdo = commando, and (RM) = Royal Marine.

10) CDO infantry and weapons fire stats are as for standard British infantry and weapons stats.

11) All recon, engineer, infantry, weapons, etc., capabilities are those found in the CD rulebook. Sniper capabilities are optional and refer to the various rules posted on the CD mailer.

12) This was originally written for CD II, but should still work with CD3, making the necessary adjustments where needed.
