Napoleonic Fighting Sail

by Hallmark Miniatures

by Darryl R. Smith

As a follow up to my review of some of the figure lines that Rob Miller offers (Issue #23), 1 suggested that I would review a sample of the Age of Sail figures that Rob carries. Rob was gracious enough to send me a sample of the 40/36 gun frigate some months ago, but I am just getting around to doing as I said I would at that time. Well, let's see if I can make it up to Rob now.

As stated, Rob sent me a frigate in the 40/36 gun size, PAINTED, for me to take a look at. Actually, I wanted a sample to see if I could recreate Perry's victory at Put-In-Bay in this scale, but alas, the scale is a little too small for what I wanted to accomplish. That said, this line of figures would be absolutely wonderful for large scale naval actions of the fleet variety.

Numerous models (17 by my count) are available, ranging from a 130 gun ship-of-theline down to a 12 gun cutter.

Prices range from $2.90/$9.00 (unpainted/painted) for the 130 gun ship all the way down to $1.10/$4.25 for the cutter. The frigate I received ($1.50/$7.50) is cleanly cast, proportionately correct, and Rob's paint work is far above average for a ship this size (less than an inch long by 3/8" wide).

Gun ports and mast work are neatly detailed by Rob, but you might consider ordering these little babies unpainted because 11 believe they would paint up quick with little effort.

If you want to get into this period and have a well-sized fleet for minimal costs, then I believe that this Hallmark line is the way to go. Robin L. Miller Miniatures, 3670 N. U.S. 23, Black River, MI 48721. (517) 724-5697 or email: itybtyrob@arrownet.com.
