Before getting to the results of this year's tournament, let's look forward. I plan on doing a second (annual?) tournament next year based on the level of interest we had at this convention. I learned a lot, and hope to improve the event's mechanics next time, including: adding minutes to the final round to help ensure that time isn't a factor in results. adjusting tie breakers modifying some terrain features to ease play on those boards. There were so many Roman armies this time that I'm seriously leaning towards a "No Romans" tournament next year. I'd like to see people bring their second string armies for a bit more variety. Please let me know (djfrank@jane.penn.com) if you have other ideas, or desperately want to play a Roman army! This year's event was a 3-round open tournament. Terry Hollern, an HMGS member from Columbus, was the winner and only undefeated player. He won by beating New Assyrian, Late Roman and Medieval French armies. Congratulations Terry! Here are the complete results.
To be honest, I didn't spend a lot of time watching the games. Many players were new to the rules -- either because they had played little or not at all, were long out of practice, or had not played under the version of the rules we used. Our introductory session satisfied some of these omissions in familiarity, but I spent more of my time interpreting the rules and adjudicating situations than watching the games. The one game that sticks out in my mind, though, is Nick Wilson'Medieval French forcing a bridge over a raging river -- something I've never managed to accomplish I Overall, it looked like people were having a good time. Most indicated that they were looking forward to next year's event, Me too!
