Review by Craig Charron, MGM
I picked up this pack in a moment of insanity at Historicon this year. Swept up in a Hoosier friend's enthusiasm for doing the '45 in 25mm, I agreed to do the Red Coats. Well, here is what I got: The pack contained 31 figures (27 "hat men" and 4 grenadiers). All the grenadiers wear cloth mitre hats and are marching with musket over the left shoulder. They have no shoulder wings on their coats, nor do they have match cases. I am not sure of the accuracy of this, as my uniform sources for this period are sadly lacking (more Osprey's to buy? Yay!). The detail is good, with the raised embroidery on the mitre being excellent. It should be fun to paint. The tricorns are adequately modeled, with raised detail to represent the lace band on top, and a bow tie "bump" to represent the cockade. The faces of all figures are typical of the sculptor, Chris Hughs' work - - scowling, elongated and rather two dimensional. Chris sculpted two or three marching poses. All have the same equipment -sabre, bayonet, calfskin haversack, and cartridge box. The only variation comes from the placement of the right arm, the "step" of the right foot to convey forward movement, and the positioning of the head. As with most Old Glory figures, they are looking in all directions, giving the unit a "casual" air. My main complaints would be poor sculpting of the gaiters and mold lines. There is relatively little flash, which may change as the molds deteriorate over time. If you are thinking that these are re-worked French and Indian War figures from the Last of the Mohican range, then you are mistaken, they are totally new models. Overall, not a bad figure, I look forward to painting them up ... someday??
