Area Events to Experience Our Past

Compiled by Darryl Smith

It's back! The season for reenactments, rendezvous, and living history is now upon us. Like some of you, I like to take in the occasional reenactment. Here is a listing of some of the events going on across our region: (ACW=American Civil War; AWI=Revolutionary War; 1812= War of 1812; PNR= Pioneer Era)

July
July 3-5: (1812), Battle Reenactment, Ft. Meigs, Perrysburg, OH. (800) 283-8916.
July 4: WWII Tank Battle, Patton Museum, Fort Knox, KY. Americans vs. Germans. Last year, Matt Davidson, Ray Garbee, and myself went to this. It was a great time, with Hetzers awaiting an American column in ambush. A pair of P-51 Mustangs came in on the deck (and I mean on the deck!), and it was all great fun until someone got hurt (a gunner in the M-5 must have got his hand caught in the firing mechanism of the main gun. He climbed out of the tank, hollered "Medic!" and tumbled to the ground. We thought it was part of the show, until the medical personnel ran out onto the field and a Blackhawk was called in for a dustoff. (The gunner was okay). Afterwards, they let you climb into some of the vehicles. Really cool stuff!
